The relationship of the three species of the new genus Ralstonia is reflected in the observation that all three form citrate siderophores.

Ralstonia solanacearum iron scavenging by the siderophore staphyloferrin B is controlled by PhcA, the global virulence regulator.

PhcA is a transcriptional regulator that activates expression of multiple virulence genes in the plant pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum. Relative to their wild-type parents, phcA mutants overproduced iron-scavenging activity detected with chrome azurol S siderophore detection medium. Transposon mutagenesis of strain AW1-PC (phcA1) generated strain GB6, which was siderophore negative but retained...

Discovery of an iron-regulated citrate synthase in Staphylococcus aureus.

Bacteria need to scavenge iron from their environment, and this is no less important for bacterial pathogens while attempting to survive in the mammalian host. One key strategy is the synthesis of small iron chelators known as siderophores. The study of siderophore biosynthesis systems over the past several years has shed light on novel enzymology and, as such, has identified new therapeutic ta...

Purification and Structural Characterization of Siderophore (Corynebactin) from Corynebacterium diphtheriae

During infection, Corynebacterium diphtheriae must compete with host iron-sequestering mechanisms for iron. C. diphtheriae can acquire iron by a siderophore-dependent iron-uptake pathway, by uptake and degradation of heme, or both. Previous studies showed that production of siderophore (corynebactin) by C. diphtheriae is repressed under high-iron growth conditions by the iron-activated diphther...

Influence of Matric Potential on Survival and Activity of Genetically Engineered Ralstonia eutropha H850Lr

Although the application of biodegradative genetically engineered micro organisms (GEMs) for bioremediation is very promising, the risks of their release should be assessed before their introduction into the environment. Lux-marked Ralstonia eutropha H850Lr (formerly Alcaligenes eutrophus H850Lr) was introduced into sterile and non-sterile soil microcosms at matric potentials ?2.11, ?30, ?750, ...

Synthesis of Staphyloferrin B ( SB ) - Cargo Conjugates

The ability of the Gram-positive human pathogen Staphylococcus aureus to cause infection and develop antimicrobial resistance poses a significant threat to public health. One potential method to combat bacterial infections involves the use of siderophore-drug conjugates to selectively deliver antibiotics to bacteria. Siderophores are low-molecular-weight chelators with high affinity for iron(Il...
